Programs - National Prescribing Service (NPS)
This page provides information on the NPS program.
This program provides GPs with independent, unbiased, evidence-based information on therapeutic topics including prescribing information, updates to the therapeutic guidelines and resources for the practice.
What is the NPS?
The NPS) is an independent, non-profit organisation that provides evidence based information and services to health professionals and the community on Quality Use of Medicines.
How does it work?
The Bankstown GP Division employs a qualified and experienced pharmacist to visit GPs.
These one to one visits generally take between twenty to thirty minutes with the Division’s NPS facilitator visiting the doctor in their own practice. Two to three different therapeutic topics are offered during any year.
What are the benefits of an NPS educational visit?
NPS visits are recognised under the QPI as part of the Practice Incentive Programme (PIP).
One visit counts for one activity. Three activities are required for each FTE GP, to be eligible for practice incentive payments with one of the activities being a compulsory clinical audit).
Even if a practice is not registered for PIP, GPs may still find a visit useful to receive the latest objective information on therapeutics and prescribing.
What can the Division offer?
The Divisions National Prescribing Service Program promotes Quality Use of Medicines by providing individual educational visits to GPs on specific therapeutic topics and also group educational sessions to GPs, Pharmacists and the Community.
The National Prescribing Service (NPS) develops independent, current, evidence-based information which is consistent with nationally recognized guidelines, services and resources.
GPs who have an educational visit from the NPS program officer will receive RACGP points. The educational visits are also counted towards the Practice Incentive Program (PIP) payment along with Clinical Audits and Case Studies.
