Health reform announcement -3rd March 2010
This page contains the latest information on the current Australian Government health and hospital reform announcements of 3rd March 2010, as well as the implications for general practice in south west Sydney.
A report - A National Health and Hospitals Network for Australia’s Future - accompanied the announcement.
The announcement advised that the Commonwealth proposed to undertake further discussions with the States and Territories in order to establish what primary health care services should be transferred to direct Commonwealth funding.
Implications for general practice in south west Sydney
On 3rd march 2010, the Australian Government announced that the proposed reforms would be put to the states and territories at the COAG meeting to be held in Canberra on 11 April 2010.
Stakeholder organisations active in primary care and general practice suggested no further announcements about general practice would occur for at least several months.
The announcement made only very general comments about primary health and general practice. At the time of the announcement, it was premature to comment on the establishment , size and scope of activities of any new network of Primary Health Care Organisations.
The announcement on 3rd March 2010 stated that the changes in hospital funding and governance arrangements, as well as the Commonwealth taking 100% responsibility for funding and policy for primary health care, would provide the platform for further reforms, with Primary Health Care reform to be a future building block on that platform.
In summary, there were no immediate implications for divisions of general practice, general practitioners, or other primary health care practitioners providing clinical services in south west Sydney, as a result of the health reform announcements of March 3.
